Schöntal Park is part of the impressive green belt that Elector Friedrich Carl von Erthal created to connect Schönbusch and the Spessart landscape. The history of the ten-hectare site dates back to the 15th century, when it was still used as a walled zoo. Where Elector Albrecht von Brandenburg once built a Beguine convent, the famous garden architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell created a masterpiece of landscape design from 1780 onwards.
Sckell transformed the site into an idyllic meadow valley with a curved lake. He artfully integrated the ruins of the convent, which was destroyed in 1556, as a romantic backdrop on an island. A special highlight is the magnolia grove on Orangerieplatz, which was planted in the 19th century and underlines Aschaffenburg's Mediterranean flair. While the historic orangery now houses the “Hofgarten-Kabarett”, the former kitchen garden was transformed into an open park landscape after the Second World War. Today, Schöntal is a lively oasis of calm in the heart of the city.
