Information

Not far from the castle square, the terraces of Usinger Schlossgarten breathe life into the history of the House of Nassau-Usingen. The grounds experienced their heyday in the early 18th century under Princess Charlotte Amalie. None other than the Mainz Baroque master Maximilian von Welsch designed the imposing complex: through massive earthworks, he transformed the hillside into four geometrically structured terraces, connected by a central staircase.

While the former castle gave way to the present-day Christian-Wirth-School after a fire in 1873, the structure of the garden remains perceptible to this day. The original "garden creation" can be traced particularly well on the uppermost terrace, which was redesigned in 1775 with a pond and winding paths modeled on English gardens. Magnificent beech and hornbeam avenues dating from 1822 now lead visitors to the monument of Prince Walrad.

Today, the park uniquely combines historical monumental heritage with modern use. Whether visiting the idyllic rose garden, taking a trip to the nature playground or strolling along the old walls – the castle garden remains the green memory of the town of Usingen.
