Park der Hochschule Geisenheim
open daily
Founded in January 2013, the "University of a New Type" looks back on a proud history: It continues the legacy of the Royal Prussian Teaching Institute for Fruit and Wine Growing, founded in 1872. Today, it is a center for research and teaching in the fields of viticulture and horticulture, landscape architecture, and beverage technology.
The heart of the campus consists of two listed parks. The approximately three-hectare university park, originally an orchard, was transformed at the end of the 19th century under the direction of Rudolf Goethe into an impressive collection of exotic trees and shrubs. To this day, winding paths and expansive lawns characterize the landscape, with the central festival meadow framed by a picturesque array of rare trees and shrubs.
In addition to magnificent magnolias and ginkgos, the park is home to true botanical rarities: A black walnut tree with a trunk circumference of almost five meters is among the largest in Germany. Exotic plants such as the North American Osage orange or the Japanese raisin tree underscore the character of this vibrant collection. Current trends in plant use are also evident in modernly designed perennial and mixed plantings, which make research findings directly tangible in the park.
