ABOUT US

Founded in 1984 as the ‘Archive of Darmstadt Artists’ by a group of dedicated Darmstadt art lovers, the Kunst Archiv Darmstadt e.V. (KAD) with its approximately 500 members is now an integral part of the city's cultural life. The KAD is located in the Literaturhaus Darmstadt and is available free of charge to all art lovers as a public archive.

COLLECTION

In addition to its comprehensive library, the archive's collection also includes documents such as letters, CVs, newspaper articles, photographs and sketchbooks. The art collection comprises around 25,000 works from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including several estates of Darmstadt artists, such as Helmut Lortz, Helga Föhl, Karl Thylmann, Bruno Müller-Linow, Karl Deppert, Esteban Fekete, Friedrich Wilhelm Jochem and Annelise Reichmann. Only artists with connections to the city of Darmstadt are listed.

USE

In parallel with its archival work, the Kunst Archiv Darmstadt regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and offers monthly events in and around Darmstadt. The archive can be used during opening hours without prior registration, and outside opening hours by appointment. The library is a reference library and comprises around 5,000 volumes of monographs, catalogues raisonnés, general reference works on the Darmstadt art scene and its own publications. Staff are available for on-site research or written information. A large part of the art collection is housed in external depots and can therefore be viewed on request.
