Information

The Celtic pavilion at the Gradierbau provides information about the history of Celtic salt production. There has been evidence of settlements in the vicinity of Bad Nauheim's brine springs since the Stone Age. The settlement became very important when the Celts systematically extracted salt from the brine. During archaeological excavations in the city center, parts of a huge Celtic salt pan were uncovered. Various excavations over the years have uncovered layers of ash, hearths, stone paving and Celtic ceramic and metal objects, as well as early medieval salt pan finds. Since 1995, the largest early industrial Celtic complex in Europe to date has come to light.

Salt boiling: during the opening period from April to October, visitors can watch the salt boilers at work on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays between 3 and 6 pm, using traditional Celtic methods. The salt can be purchased as a souvenir. A functioning salt boiling oven, text and image panels, films and selected replicas of Celtic tools vividly demonstrate the working and living environment of the Celts and the excavations of the Celtic saltworks.
