Gentil-Haus
63739 Aschaffenburg
Visits from April to October only as part of a guided tour
The successful Aschaffenburg-based mechanical engineer, pump manufacturer, and art collector Anton Gentil (1867–1951) had the villa built in 1922/23 according to his own designs to house his ever-growing art collection. An annexe was added in 1924 to house a car garage, and in 1929 a studio was built for Gentil's son Otto, a freelance sculptor. The picturesque complex of buildings with its varied roofscape largely retains its original features, designed by Anton Gentil and furnished with an extensive art collection. The interior design, which Gentil himself created, features paintings, medieval sculptures, altars, stoneware, glassware, folk art, East Asian art, and modern art. He bequeathed the original “collector's house,” whose idiosyncratic style and special atmosphere can be understood from the tradition of artists' houses and the Arts and Crafts movement, to his hometown in 1949, including his extensive art collection, and it is still considered an insider tip in Aschaffenburg today.
