Prinz-Georg-Garten Darmstadt
Open year-round until dusk
This small park in the heart of Darmstadt is a peaceful place to relax. Originally laid out by Landgrave Ludwig VIII (1691–1768) with a garden house and adjoining kitchen garden, it was later characterized by Baroque stylistic elements such as orangery terraces and hedge architecture. Landgrave Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt (1667–1739) connected the garden to the adjacent domain. In 1764, Landgrave Ludwig VIII gave the grounds to his son Prince Georg Wilhelm. It was created by merging two originally independent gardens: that of Landgrave Ernst Ludwig and the adjacent garden of General von Pretlack with its delicate garden house. This structure is still visible today in the rectangular layout. A special feature is the combination of ornamental and kitchen gardens: flowers grow alongside fruit, herbs, and vegetables in beds bordered by boxwood. The original structure with ornamental and kitchen gardens is still evident today, with flowers, fruit trees, herbs, and vegetables alternating in the boxwood hedges.
