Puppet theater offers lighthearted, funny, profound, and serious entertainment for all ages. Regardless of its form or content, good puppet theater is always a means of ethical and aesthetic education. Steinau an der Straße was chosen as the venue for the Puppet Theater Days in 1993 because the town enjoys a high reputation for puppetry among both amateurs and professionals. In the 1950s, Karl Magersuppe founded the marionette theater in the former stables of the castle. Through his cultural work both locally and for international audiences, Steinau became known far beyond its borders. Years ago, puppet theater had the reputation of being "miniature human theater" and was therefore classified as theater for children. However, puppet theater has long since been recognized as having the same creative potential as "mainstream theater." Performance techniques range from classic marionettes, hand puppets, and shadow puppetry to open theater with hand puppets, large figures, flat figures, and masks, all the way to "just" materials and objects.
Over the years, the Steinau Puppet Theatre Festival has become a firmly established institution, renowned for its high-quality performances.
